With the many varieties of blinds and window shades on the market you might be wondering “What are mini blinds anyways?” and “What is the best choice for my home?”. Mini Blinds as we know them were developed in the 1950’s and are also called venetian blinds because traveling Venetian traders brought the blinds to Venice and Paris to sell. They have become a durable and affordable classic blind, available in a variety of colors to suit just about every room and taste.
Originally mini blind slats were held together by pieces of fabric, today thinner cord is used for this purpose to maximize the view when the blinds are open. Mini blinds can be customized to perfectly fit any size window including side-lights. Venetian blinds are available in wood, plastics, aluminum metals, faux wood, or vinyl.
You can also choose many different slat sizes for mini blinds. The 1/2 inch slat size is often called a micro mini blind and tends to be used in smaller windows. One inch and 1 3/8 inch slats are used in most homes and offices, and the 2 inch slats are usually used for larger more expansive windows.
How Mini Blinds Work
Of course mini blinds main purpose is to give you control over light and privacy, they do this through the use of a wand or continuous loop operation and cords. Because this window blind uses cords, it is not suitable for spaces where children or pets have access to the windows. It works by tilting the slats all the way open, partially open, or closed in either direction.
First of all you can add remote controlled motorization, and you can add cloth tape meant to enhance the style of the mini blind. Second there are the mount options available, all window coverings come as either an inside mount or an outside mount. They work as follows:
An inside mount fits inside the window frame. This works best for most windows and offers a custom fitted appearance. Make sure to measure the exact window opening size at the top, middle, and bottom then choose the smallest measurement and the manufacturer will deduct a fraction of an inch from that measurement automatically for the perfect fit.
An outside mount is installed on or outside of the window casing. The manufacturer will not make any deductions to this measurement. End caps and frame size should be considered when measuring for an outside mount.
Now you no longer have to wonder “What are mini blinds?”
