What are window treatments anyways?

Window treatments are basically functional and aesthetic coverings placed inside, on, or over windows. Usually a window treatment serves to provide those inside the building with privacy and control over the natural light entering the home or building during the day. These window coverings can also function as insulators to keep cool air in during the summer and warm air in during the winter.

Often window treatments are used as part of the overall interior decor of a room. Everything from simple window treatments to luxury window treatments exist, the choice between these is usually made depending on budget and style preference. We will go over a few of the most popular options, followed by beautiful pictures of window treatments to help inspire you!

Faux Wood Blinds
Faux Wood is arguably one of the most popular choices today. This type of window treatment comes in a variety of stains, whites, off-whites, and wood tones that capture wood’s warm classic beauty. Faux wood window blinds are flame resistant, easy to clean, resist fading, and can be washed. Perfect for areas where moisture can be an issue like kitchens, bathrooms, and dining rooms.

Wood Blinds
On the luxury side of the spectrum, wood blinds are crafted from the finest hardwoods and combine function with the elegance and durability of real wood. Wood blinds are great insulators, come in a variety of stains, whites, and colors, and are easy to clean. There are several slat sizes available so you can match your larger windows to your French doors and smaller windows.

Roller Shades
Roller shades are made from many different types of materials like solar mesh or various types of fabric and come in a huge variety of color options making it easy to match your home decor. Roller shade styles enhance the beauty of any area while also providing your home with privacy, light control from light filtering to room darkening, and added energy efficiency.

Roman Shades
Again on the luxury side, elegant  roman shades add a real designer flair to a room while also offering carefully engineered light and privacy control. Seamless custom roman shade widths are available up to 120″ and are made to fit your window perfectly with no light gaps. Options include classic flat styles as well as the hobbled or folded style which gives you more of a drapery look.

What are mini blinds?

Aluminum Horizontal Blinds Graber

With the many varieties of blinds and window shades on the market you might be wondering “What are mini blinds anyways?” and “What is the best choice for my home?”. Mini Blinds as we know them were developed in the 1950’s and are also called venetian blinds because  traveling Venetian traders brought the blinds to Venice and Paris to sell. They have become a durable and affordable classic blind, available in a variety of colors to suit just about every room and taste.

Originally mini blind slats were held together by pieces of fabric, today thinner cord is used for this purpose to maximize the view when the blinds are open. Mini blinds can be customized to perfectly fit any size window including side-lights. Venetian blinds are available in wood, plastics, aluminum metals, faux wood, or vinyl.

Available Styles

You can also choose many different slat sizes for mini blinds. The 1/2 inch slat size is often called a micro mini blind and tends to be used in smaller windows. One inch and 1 3/8 inch slats are used in most homes and offices, and the 2 inch slats are usually used for larger more expansive windows.

How Mini Blinds Work

Of course mini blinds main purpose is to give you control over light and privacy, they do this through the use of a wand or continuous loop operation and cords. Because this window blind uses cords, it is not suitable for spaces where children or pets have access to the windows. It works by tilting the slats all the way open, partially open, or closed in either direction.

Available Options

First of all you can add remote controlled motorization, and you can add cloth tape meant to enhance the style of the mini blind. Second there are the mount options available, all window coverings come as either an inside mount or an outside mount. They work as follows:

An inside mount fits inside the window frame. This works best for most windows and offers a custom fitted appearance. Make sure to measure the exact window opening size at the top, middle, and bottom then choose the smallest measurement and the manufacturer will deduct a fraction of an inch from that measurement automatically for the perfect fit.

An outside mount is installed on or outside of the window casing. The manufacturer will not make any deductions to this measurement. End caps and frame size should be considered when measuring for an outside mount.

Now you no longer have to wonder “What are mini blinds?”

Budget Blinds

You really need to budget blinds into the purchase of a new home, or into the re-design of a room. Just blinds alone can increase the value of your home, and dramatically affect the overall feeling of a room. Blinds are amazing window treatments that can be left as simple and sophisticated, or they can be dressed up with luxe fabric drapes, curtains, and valances.

Select blinds that allow you to dress your windows in an uncluttered and clean way, giving you control over light and full control over the view outside. It is often very affordable to install automatic blinds, easy-lift or the popular top-down bottom-up shades, and these options are safer since they have no cords to pose as a risk to young children. Blinds can be made of wood, woven wood (a.k.a. bamboo blinds), aluminum, vinyl, composite pvc, or the ever popular faux-wood blind.

The decision of what type of blinds you will use will depend heavily of the types and sizes of windows in your home, your blinds budget, and of course on your personal taste preferences. We tend to advise homeowners to strongly consider hard wood shutters or hardwood blinds since the installation of such gorgeous permanent window treatments can actually increase the eventual resale value of your home, reduce energy costs because they are so precisely fitted, and they are extremely durable, holding up over many years of use. However if you can not budget blinds of this nature into your space, or if they do not fit your tastes there are plenty of other great options.

Perhaps you do not want to block your view at all, but you also want to protect your furnishings and reduce solar heat and glare, in this case solar shades would almost certainly be what you would look for.

No matter what your budget is, blinds or shades come in so many varieties, colors, and options you are sure to find your perfect match.
