10 Reasons to Replace Your Blinds

Is it time to replace the blinds in your home? Are they outdated, old, or simply boring to look at? There are many reasons you might want to replace your blinds and if you are not quite sure yet if it is time to replace them or not, here is a list of 10 reasons why you probably should.

Great Bathroom Design

1. They are hard to clean
Those blinds you can never seem to get 100% clean no matter what you do or try… or they simply take forever to clean? Time to replace them with something easier to maintain!

2. They Are Beyond Repair
You know the ones… you used up all the extra slats, they’re warped or simply nonfunctioning, maybe all of the above? Time to get new blinds and save yourself the headaches!

3. They Look Outdated
They remind you of your grannies house… or a tacky set over at your Auntie Joan’s place. Worse… you are afraid they will remind your guests of their grannies place! Time to replace and refresh with a modern and updated look.

4. They Don’t Match Anything Else
Did they look great in the magazine but in place they clash with everything else in the room? It’s time to give them away and choose a better match.

5. They Don’t Fit Properly
You know they should fit right in the window but there is a big gap on the side… or perhaps they are a little too tight and look “forced” to fit? Time to get correctly fitting blinds.

6. They Are Difficult To Operate
You thought the seamless look would be great for that huge picture window… but now you have heavy blinds that are a chore to lift and lower? It is time to find a better lightweight option and make use of that window again.

7. There Are Small Children Around
You or a close family member recently welcomed a bundle of joy and you are worried about the dangers of dangling cords. Your best option is to select a cordless window treatment and eliminate this serious hidden hazard.

8. You Need A Different Type of Blind
Perhaps you work late and you need to nap during daylight hours… or maybe your theatre room needs better light control. No problem… you can choose room-darkening blinds to eliminate most of the light in a room… or you can go with light filtering to make the most of the sunshine.

9. You Have Had These Blinds Forever
You moved in and the blinds were there… you never bothered to replace them. Time to buy blinds that better reflect the class and style of your home.

10. You Just Want Something New
You want new blinds. Well that is a good enough reason for us! Where to find these new blinds you ask? You can find the best prices and selection at Blindsmax.com of course. Make sure to give us a call with any questions or concerns.

Blinds Defined: Common Window Covering Terms

These are the terms and definitions you will commonly hear when you are in the process of purchasing blinds. Since each homeowner has different needs there are many different options and types of blinds available! If we missed anything in our glossary of terms, or if you would still like personal assistance, feel free to contact us Monday-Friday between 9am and 5pm EST.

Window Coverings: Window coverings is a blanket term for the various blinds, shades, shutters, and curtains or drapes that cover and insulate the windows in a home.

Window Blind: Blinds are window coverings used for home decor, insulation, privacy, and light control. There are several types of blinds including vertical blinds, mini blinds, faux wood blinds, wood blinds, and composite blinds to name a few.

Window Shade: Shades are window coverings used in home decor for style as well as privacy and light control. The various types of window shades include roman shades, solar shades, roman shades, woven wood shades, bamboo shades, pleated shades, and cellular shades.

Lift Cord: The string-like cord that is part of a system of cords that run through the slats of a blind which allow that blind to be hung, opened, and closed with the blind controls.

Sheers: Blinds or shades made from translucent fabrics that allow light to filter through the material. Sheers are often used to create layers but can be used alone for a soft romantic look.

Inside Mount: Inside mount blinds and shades are mounted inside the window frame. This is by far the most popular choice and provides a custom fitted look.

Outside Mount: Outside mounted blinds and shades are mounted outside the window, on the wood trim or wall.

Headrail: The long rectangular box at the top of a window blind that encases the operating mechanisms for the blind.

Two-On-One: Two blinds on a single headrail. Ideal for larger windows where a single blind could be difficult to operate.

Three-On-One: Three blinds on a single headrail. This is an ideal choice for very large or long windows.

Tilt Wand: Tilt wand mechanisms allow you to operate the amount that the slats open or close. They provide complete control by simply twisting the wand.

Rollease Chain – This is the traditional option which operates the window shade with the pull of a chain. You can choose to have the chain on either the right or left side of the shade.

Cordless: The cordless option operates with an easy lift system typically at the press of a button which allows you to easily lift and lower the blind. This is an ideal option for those who want a clean cord free look, and it is the safest option for those with children and pets.

Blackout / Room Darkening: Blackout or room darkening material or liner is the best choice if you want to block out a majority of the light from outside.

Light Filtering: Light filtering liners allow for more privacy without blocking out a lot of the natural light. This option will softly filter the light entering the room.

Eco-Friendly: Eco-friendly blinds and shades are made using earth friendly materials and processes. This is an option available on most products at BlindsMax.com.

Energy Efficient: Energy efficient blinds help to insulate the window, reducing the heat gain and loss. This in turn tends to help reduce energy costs and lower bills.

Motorized / Remote Control: Motorized blinds and shades use a small electric or battery operated motor to open and close or lift the window covering. With the motorized lift option your blinds and shades can be operated at the touch of a button on a remote control. This is the most ideal option for large windows and hard to reach places.

Top Down / Bottom Up: This option allows you to raise and lower your window coverings from the bottom and top. This is ideal for those who want the ultimate in privacy and light control.

Window Valance: The definition of a window valance is the short decorative box, curtain, or drapery that is hung to cover the upper part of a window. The valance can be used alone to cover the headrail or with curtains or drapes.

Privacy Liner: A privacy liner is a strip of material used on the back side of a window covering to cover any open spaces. This is an especially common option for bamboo shades which have natural gaps in the woven wood.

Decorative Tape: Decorative tape or “Cloth Tape” is used for blocking out light leakage along the cords of a blind, and is also used to accent and compliment the design of a room.

Commercial Window Coverings: Commercial window coverings are made with code compliance in mind and are durable, safe, and flame resistant. Typically special orders must be made to assure this high level of quality for hospitals, hotels, office buildings, schools and other commercial business applications. To place a commercial order, and for bulk pricing quotes please contact us at (888) 305-8020 Monday-Friday between 9am and 5pm EST.

Blind Repair – Fix My Blinds!

close up wood blind

If your blinds still have plenty of life left and don’t quite need replacing yet you can do most minor blind repairs on your own. But before we get to that, keep it in mind that if your blinds are in need of extensive repair it might be better and much easier to invest in the newer more durable models available today. Repairs requiring several new parts could make it more costly than replacing the blind in some cases. You can get cheap-priced blinds and window shades at Blindsmax, which includes free shipping.

Disclaimer: Make sure your blinds are not under a warranty that could cover the repairs. Obviously we can’t promise you won’t damage your blinds further. You do these self-repairs at your own risk!

Fixing a Broken Slat in Blinds

You will need an extra slat to replace any broken ones. If you do not have an extra slat you can often take one from the bottom of a blind that might have extra slats due to excessive length. Make sure to have your blinds in the open position while working on this repair.

Step 1. Remove the Plugs

  • On the bottom of the blinds should be at least two plugs that cover and hold the lift strings (the thicker center string). You can easily remove the plugs using a flathead screwdriver.
  • Pull the string through the hole and cut or untie the knot. Make sure you will be able to re-tie or knot the string when you finish your repair.

Step 2. Remove the Lift String

  • Go as far as the highest blind slat you wish to replace.
  • Remove the broken slat pieces.

Step 3. Insert the Replacement Slats

  • You will also move the base of the blind up to cover any gaps.

Step 4. Re-Thread the Lift String

  • Make sure the same course is followed through the slats.
  • Follow the pattern of the right to the left.

Step 5. Thread the Base of the Blind

  • Push the string back through the base.
  • Tie off each side at the same length.

Step 6. Put The Plugs Back In

  • Place the plugs over the rungs of the other string to secure in place.
  • You can use a rubber mallet or hammer to secure the plugs.

Here’s a short video showing you the steps.

How to Shorten Blinds (Remove Excess Length)

Are your blinds a little bit too long? Simply follow these instructions for removing the slat/s on the bottom to shorten the length of your horizontal blind easily.

2.      Release the Slats

  • Remove the bottom rail and the number of slats you wish to remove.

3.      Replace The Bottom Rail

  • Place the bottom rail in the previous location of the last slat your removed.

4.      Adjust The String

  • Cut the string ladder above the rung that hangs below the bottom blind rail.
  • Make sure that you have enough ladder string hanging below the rail to insert the strings back into the holes on the bottom rail.

5.      Thread the Base of the Blind

  • Push the string back through the base.
  • Tie off each side at the same length.

6.      Put The Plugs Back In

  • Place the plugs over the rungs of the other string to secure in place.
  • You can use a rubber mallet or hammer to secure the plugs.

Here’s a short video showing you the steps

How to Replace a Blind Tilter

Sometimes due to handling issues during shipping or unexpected drops during installation, a tilt mechanism may become damaged and cease to function. To fix this see the potential solutions listed below.

Remove the Blind From the Window

  • Look at the metal head rail at the top of your blind and locate the metal rod that runs the length of it.

2.      Identify the Tilt Mechanism Housing

  • You should see a space where you can push the end of the tilt rod back into the mechanism housing if it is dislodged.
  • If this is not the issue you will need a replacement.

3.      Remove End Caps & Metal End Stiffener

  • The end stiffener should be right at the edge of the headrail.

4.      Replace the Tilting Mechanism

  • Pull or snap-out the old tilt mechanism out and replace it with the new one.
  • Make sure to slide the tilt rod back into the new tilt mechanism.

5.      Replace the End Stiffener & End Cap

  • Make sure to replace the end stiffener and end caps (if any).

Here’s a short video showing you the steps.

Summer Is Around The Corner, Is Your Backyard Ready?

Graber Porch Solar Shades
Graber Porch Solar Shades

Graber Porch Solar Shades

Is your backyard ready for summer? If a blanket of sticky green pollen coating everything in sight was not enough to prove it, the renewal of a stormy spring recently should for sure. There was a bit of a lapse in spring like weather for 2013 but there is little doubt that spring has sprung and summer is well on its way to your doorstep.

Spring cleaning indoors is a common theme, but getting your outdoor living areas ready is also important. Do what you need to do now, so that when the heat sets in you can relax on your porch with some ice cold lemonade or tea with your feet up. Read over these four steps to get your backyard ready for summer.

1. Grow some privacy. Unless you live in a secluded cottage, it’s nice to have a fence or row of bushes to shelter your home from the neighbors. An arbor, trellis or pergola with hanging vines is another way to create some privacy. Flowering vines like trumpet vines, clematis or morning glory help create a romantic garden full of butterflies and hummingbirds. These structures also offer a wind-break and cast some shade during the hottest summer months.

2. Get cozy outdoors. Decks, patios and even a flat portion of the yard can be perfect for outdoor entertaining. Start thinking cook-outs, pool parties and game nights. Find some affordable patio furniture, and create cozy clusters with chairs, sofas and small tables. If you’re looking to add more home decor elements, toss some brightly colored throw pillows, umbrellas and potted plants into the mix to bring the space together.

3. Simplify pool maintenance. Family pools open up a whole new world of summer fun. But like any solid investment, pools require a little maintenance. Using a pool cover can reduce pool heating costs by 50 to 70 percent.

4. Keep your porch cool and comfortable. Solar shades come in many varieties and colors to match your outdoor living needs. They provide welcome shade and can block harsh sunlight making a porch or sun room much more inviting. Using solar shades can lower the temperature in that area as much as 10 degrees and helps protect your family against heat stroke and sunburns from enjoying the outdoors.

Take a look at the gallery of solar shades below for ideas and inspirations for your porch or sunroom and feel free to pin them to Pinterest! Admit It – You HATE to Clean… These 3 Things Can Cut Your Time Doing Chores In Half

Dining Room Shades Pleated
Dining Room Shades Pleated

Dining Room Shades Pleated

Nobody likes to clean… well… maybe Martha Stewart does, but I bet even she has a maid to help with some chores. Ask most women what they would do if they suddenly had a lot more money and most would tell you (after buying those must-have designer shoes), they would hire someone to help clean the house.

Some of us might even have the money to hire someone but it seems pointless to spend it when we could get something else we really want. Either way the reality is that it usually falls to us to keep things in order. Really nobody wants to live in a messy home, it just zaps your energy away. While I can’t magically make it all go away I do know a few tricks to get things neat and tidy with less time and effort so here goes.

1. Baskets are your friend.
Your Mom calls… she will be over in 30 minutes to bring you some of her famous homemade cookies but your living room is a mess! To avoid the disapproving looks and potential nagging commentary what you need are baskets. Those cloth or wicker baskets are amazing spots to quickly toss things into and hide a mess in record time and can be then placed on shelves, under the coffee table, or next to the couch (there are some with lids).

2. Magnetic Dusters
The books, random kids toys, and the pile of bills is taken care of… and you look up and notice the fan blades are dusty (I was going to clean that last week… I promise.), not to mention the blinds on the window. This is why everyone needs a magnetic duster or two (hubby can help “or else”…), with a few quick swipes everything is set right again. Tilt the blinds shut one way, sweep your duster, then turn them the other way to get the other side quickly. Make sure to open them afterwards so it’s bright and cheerful… you do not get accused of sitting in the dark so much.

3. Scented Disinfectant Wipes
Scented wipes like the Clorox or Lysol disinfecting wipes are a nifty little speed cleaning weapon for your arsenal. Not only can you get the dust off shelves and the little spills and marks off your furniture fast, you also make the whole room smell fresh and clean. It’s like a double whammy of cleaning power that will have your guests wondering how on earth you keep your house so perfect.

Good thing they were not there 30 minutes ago…

What is the next step? Time to choose the perfect window fashions to accentuate your home and your personal style. Time to shop BlindsMax for the best price “Guaranteed” and we mean it. If anyone else has a lower price on the same blinds or shades, we will match it AND give you 10% off your order provided it is verifiable and not below our cost. We are waiting to serve you.

How To Measure For Blinds

You need new blinds and you need to know how to measure your windows for blinds before you can even begin to think about the next step. Lucky for you we have you covered from measuring vertical blinds for sliding glass doors, to measuring for blinds for typical windows. Start by purchasing or borrowing a metal tape measure that can record measurements to within an 1/8th of an inch.

Measuring For Inside Mount Blinds & Shades

Inside mount window coverings are the most common type and are mounted inside the window frame.

To find the width: Measure exact distance to the nearest 1/8″ between inside surfaces of window frame at the top, middle, and bottom. Use the narrowest width. Do not make any width deductions. The factory will make the appropriate deductions.

To find the height: Measure exact distance to the nearest 1/8″ from inside surface at top of window to sill at the left, middle, and right. Use the longest height. If you prefer blind not to touch sill, deduct 1/4″. If there is no sill, measure to the point where blind is to reach.

Measuring For Outside Mount Blinds & Shades

Outside mount window coverings are mounted outside the window frame and cover the entire window.  It is best to allow for some overlap in this case. For outside mount window covering applications, allow the blind or shade to overlap 1 1/2″ to 3″ on the sides, top, and bottom of the window.

To find the width: Measure exact distance to the nearest 1/8″ between the outermost points where the blind is to be placed. For optimum light control, this measurement should extend 3/4″ beyond the window opening on each side (or 1 1/2″ for the entire width)

To find the height: Measure exact distance to the nearest 1/8″ from where top of blind will be located to top of sill. If there is no sill or if blind is to overlap window frame, measure to point blind is to reach.

Measuring Vertical Blinds For Sliding Glass Doors

Measuring vertical blinds for sliding glass and patio doors can be a little tricky at times. Note that for your safety; blinds installed on windows near wall or baseboard heaters must clear the heaters by 12″ above and 6″ to the side. Make sure there are no obstructions on either side of the window that may prevent you from ordering a wider blind.

1. Measure the width of the area to be covered at the place where the head rail will be installed. The Vertical Blind should overlap opening at least 4″ on each side to ensure privacy.

2. Measure the height of the area to be covered at the left, center and right. Blind should extend at least 3″ above opening or window molding.

3. To ensure easy access through the door and allow adequate overlap, consider the stack width.

4. For installations to the floor, deduct 1/2″ from the shortest height for proper clearance.

5. Specifying outside mount measurements means the factory makes allowances for head rail deductions only.

4 Easy Ways To Save Money At Home

Graber Cellular Shades Bathroom

Everyone likes to save money and the best way to do so is to start at home. We are about to share with you the top 4 easy secrets to saving hundreds of dollars a year or more! These are simple things that anyone can do to make a big difference; on average applying these tips will save you $342 per year.

1. Switch It! Coming in first is what we like to call “switch it”. Make sure you and your family keep everything turned off when it’s not in use. When we say switch it we mean more than just the overhead lights; ceiling fans, computers, televisions, nightlights, lamps, electronics, even some small appliances can all be switched off and unplugged when not in use.

2. Super Size It! Ok, I bet I can guess what you are thinking… “I saw that movie with the guy eating that fast food.” however that is not exactly what I mean even though this does have to do with food. You can save quite a bit of money by buying things in bulk packages. One good example is hamburger which can be over $3 a pound if you purchase it by the pound, but if you opt for large oversize packages you might pay as little as $2 per pound.

3. Replace It! We are all guilty of this at one point or another… we have old outdated stuff we know we need to replace but we never get around to it. You may be thinking “How can replacing things SAVE me any money?” and I do not blame you so let me explain. If for example you update your incandescent light bulbs (Operating Cost: $328.59/year) to the new LED ones (Operating Cost: $32.85/year) the cost of the replacement is still much lower than the operating cost thus you still save even though you bought something.

Buy This – Not That (Not An Exhaustive List):

  • Buy LED Light Bulbs – Not Incandescent Light Bulbs (Save More on Electricity)
  • Buy Insulating Cellular Shades – Not Cheapo Store Blinds (Save on Heating & Cooling Bills)
  • Buy Energy Star Appliances – Not Older or Cheap Inefficient Off-Brands (Save On Electricity)

4.  Get Creative! While creative and crafty tend to be thought of lately as something more ladies do, men and women can BOTH contribute to this money saving idea. One easy way to do this is to re-purpose old furniture instead of buying new. Take for example a worn out set of dressers still in decent physical shape but worn due to the inevitable passage of time; by sanding them down and refinishing them, or repainting them, then adding new knobs and handles you have a like-new set of furniture. Sometimes a creative solution is as simple rearranging furniture into different rooms.

Choosing Window Treatments for Sliding Glass Doors and for Patio Doors

Vertical Cellular Shades

When it comes to picking out window treatments for sliding glass doors, patio doors, or French doors, it can be a real challenge. You need function, you want style, and you definitely do not want to have to deal with replacing your window treatments often due to too much wear and tear from a high traffic location.

Fear not, we have some useful expert advice for you from the brilliant minds of the Blindsmax team! There are actually many excellent options for covering these rather large and difficult doors, the perfect one is really going to depend on your taste, the type of door, and your budget. We will outline what we feel are your best options to evaluate.

Roman Shades
Roman shades are excellent for French and patio doors since the fabric tends to hold up very well over time. There are also plenty of styles to choose from to match existing decor. Remember to measure carefully so that you allow for the fabric to cover the entire window, but not so wide that the fabric will get in the way of the knob on the door. Roman shades are not ideal for sliding glass doors.

Vertical Blinds and Shades
Vertical blinds and shades are some of the best options for sliding glass doors, and there are a multitude of fabrics and other materials to choose from. A popular new trend is to use vertical cellular shades to give a room unique softness and light control while also creating a superior barrier against the extreme heat and cold fluxuations common around large sliding glass doors. Vertical blinds can be used for patio and French doors but may not be the best choice since they hide the doors themselves when closed.

Horizontal Blinds
Horizontal blinds are a good choice for patio and French doors but there are a few considerations to observe. There are many types of blinds to choose from that could work including, aluminum mini blinds, faux wood blinds, hardwood blinds, and composite blinds. Blinds have a tendency to “slap” or bump the door with general use which can be damaging and anoying, so you will need a hold down bracket installed to avoid this. Blinds are not ideal for sliding glass doors.

Levolor Aluminum Mini Blinds

Levolor Aluminum Mini Blinds

Drapes and Curtains
Curtains and drapes are also a good choice for sliding glass doors, patio doors, and French Doors because they can be used and maneuvered in various ways. Avoid purchasing pre-measured curtains since they rarely are a “perfect” fit for your specific door. When you use curtains over any door it is important that they come with a quality liner to function well and to protect the color and crispness of the fabric for years to come.
