You really need to budget blinds into the purchase of a new home, or into the re-design of a room. Just blinds alone can increase the value of your home, and dramatically affect the overall feeling of a room. Blinds are amazing window treatments that can be left as simple and sophisticated, or they can be dressed up with luxe fabric drapes, curtains, and valances.
Select blinds that allow you to dress your windows in an uncluttered and clean way, giving you control over light and full control over the view outside. It is often very affordable to install automatic blinds, easy-lift or the popular top-down bottom-up shades, and these options are safer since they have no cords to pose as a risk to young children. Blinds can be made of wood, woven wood (a.k.a. bamboo blinds), aluminum, vinyl, composite pvc, or the ever popular faux-wood blind.
The decision of what type of blinds you will use will depend heavily of the types and sizes of windows in your home, your blinds budget, and of course on your personal taste preferences. We tend to advise homeowners to strongly consider hard wood shutters or hardwood blinds since the installation of such gorgeous permanent window treatments can actually increase the eventual resale value of your home, reduce energy costs because they are so precisely fitted, and they are extremely durable, holding up over many years of use. However if you can not budget blinds of this nature into your space, or if they do not fit your tastes there are plenty of other great options.
Perhaps you want a lot of light but you also desire privacy, sheer shades would do the trick perfectly. On the other hand perhaps you want to be able to block out the sunlight completely so you can work, watch a movie, or even sleep during the day, if this is you then you want to think blackout shades. Perhaps you do not want to block your view at all, but you also want to protect your furnishings and reduce solar heat and glare, in this case solar shades would almost certainly be what you would look for.
No matter what your budget is, blinds or shades come in so many varieties, colors, and options you are sure to find your perfect match. Prices for blinds, shutters and shades range anywhere from $14 to $300 per window, depending on the brand, features, and model. Is this expense worth it? Definitely, if value, privacy, and light control are important to you.
